Diniz Camara was a pioneering BJJ practitioner in Recife, Pernambuco. He initially trained under George Gracie and later studied under Takeo Yano. By December 1952, he had already opened his own academy in Recife while still a brown belt. In January 1953, he competed against Yano in a professional match and lost, then joined Yano's academy. On August 9, 1953, Yano promoted Camara to black belt — considered the first verifiable BJJ black belt promotion in history, based on primary newspaper sources. He co-trained the legendary undefeated fighter Euclides Pereira alongside Jose Jurandir Moura.
