Luke Griffith is South Africa's leading modern grappling export. The son of BJJ black belt Lloyd Griffith, he began training at age five in Johannesburg. His breakout came at the 2022 ADCC European & African Trials, which he won (repeating in 2023). A training trip to the Renzo Gracie Academy in Austin led John Danaher to invite him into the New Wave professional group, where he earned his brown belt in June 2022 and captured double gold at the 2023 IBJJF No-Gi Worlds. He took +99kg silver at the 2024 ADCC World Championship, and after being promoted to black belt by Danaher in April 2025, won the Who's Number One heavyweight title in December 2025, submitting Felipe Pena. He is regarded as one of the top heavyweight no-gi grapplers of his generation.
