Robert Vingsnes founded Aalesund BJJ (AABJJ) in 1998, making it one of the oldest BJJ academies in Norway and predating the Frontline-led growth of the 2000s. His lineage is unusual for the country: a Paraestra affiliate in the Yuki Nakai → Hiroshi Tsuruya → Takayuki Hirose line, putting him among the very small group of Norwegian black belts whose certificate runs through Japan rather than Brazil.
His mat life is broader still. Vingsnes holds a 2nd dan in judo and won multiple All Japan BJJ titles at coloured belts before reaching 2nd-degree black belt in jiu-jitsu. That dual rank gives his teaching a recognisable accent — gripping, balance and seizing patterns that map cleanly onto judo throws.
Nearly three decades into AABJJ, he is the central figure in BJJ on the Sunnmøre coast, and arguably the most distinctive lineage-holder anywhere in Norwegian jiu-jitsu.
