"the name Malibu started when Sergio was between 13 to 14 years old, in the Arpoador beach. In the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro during the 60s and 70s, it was common practice for youngsters raised in the local beaches to have nicknames, usually given by the elders. In the case of Sergio, due to the strong influence surfing had in his life, and with few options to have belongings imported from the US, he used more than often a t-shirt with a colourful design and the word Malibu written at the front, an allusion to the famous North American beach. Due to the repeated use of the shirt, surfers of the area began calling "Malibu", a name which remained the course of adult life of Sergio, he is often called "Maliba" as well (short for Malibu)."
