Anders Helgesen reached brown belt under Vidar Sandene at Grenland BJJ & Wrestling and now runs the academy's beginner programme as head coach. The role is the most consequential one in any gym — the first contact with new students determines who stays and who quits — and at Grenland that responsibility sits with him.
His own competition record is the kind of plain, useful evidence that gives a beginner coach credibility on the mat: eight medals from thirteen BJJ and submission wrestling competitions, an honest hit rate from a competitor still building his record. A judo background and ten years on the BJJ mat shape his teaching.
For the Grenland room — Vidar Sandene's base in Porsgrunn — Helgesen is one of the senior coloured belts holding the bottom of the pipeline together while the advanced programme under Stefan Ydstie handles the upper end.
