Vidar Sandene earned his black belt under Bruno Carvalho at Team Carvalho in Drammen and turned that lineage into the founding instruction at Grenland BJJ & Wrestling in Porsgrunn — the academy at Kjølnes Ring 60 that has become the anchor of BJJ in Telemark.
Most of the serious black belts in Telemark today either trained directly with Sandene or trained with someone who did. He promoted Stefan Ydstie and Anders Helgesen, the two senior coaches now running the Grenland advanced and beginner programmes, ensuring the academy's pipeline can sustain itself across generations.
For a region of Norway that had no recognisable BJJ presence before the Grenland programme began, his quiet, long-form work has been the difference between a county where BJJ exists as a hobby and a county that produces black belts. Telemark belongs on the national BJJ map because of him.
